About Yoga

Picture
The word "yoga" comes from the Sanskrit root yuj, which means "to join" or "to yoke".

Yoga is a 5,000 year old science based on a harmonizing system of development for the body, mind, and spirit. When approached from a place of awareness, the continued practice of yoga will lead you to a sense of peace and greater well-being. The practice of yoga makes the body strong and flexible. It also improves the functioning of the immune, respiratory, circulatory, digestive, and hormonal systems of the body. Yoga brings about emotional stability and clarity of mind as well.  It is a practice of uniting and integrating body, mind, breath, & spirit.

Everyone can practice yoga. Regardless of age, experience, or level of flexibility we can all benefit from yoga if we maintain a “mental flexibility", patience, and openness to each experience.

Yoga can be as much or as little as you want it to be. For some it is purely a physical pursuit, keeping the body toned, strong and flexible. For others, yoga becomes more of a mindset and a way of living. Soul Touch honors whatever your reason for practicing or level of experience.

Class Levels
Foundations A  is structured to open the joints, develop strength, and increase the ability of the body to do energetic practices. It also helps relieve and prevent degenerative diseases and conditions like arthritis, high blood pressure, and back problems.  A key part of this level is developing awareness so that one can move into advanced practices with better alignment and attention to finer details. Basic breathing (pranayama) and relaxation techniques will be taught for stress reduction.  Appropriate for all students.

Foundations B includes classical asana (physical poses), subtle (energetic) practices, and theory.  Its purpose is to further develop hip flexibility, core strength, and upper body strength, thus preparing the students for the rigors of more advanced practices. Breathing techniques at this level will help develop lung capacity, and simple meditation practices will be taught.  Appropriate for all students.

Foundations C focuses on teaching the full Surya Namaskara (sun salutation) sequence. This is a powerful series of poses which requires a healthy back, core strength, and upper body strength to perform fully and safely. More advanced pranayamas and meditative practices are begun.  Mudras and mantras are included in these classes.  Permission required. Only for students who have practiced at the A/B level for several sessions.
